Brockton fire under investigation By Tim Grace, Enterprise staff writer
BROCKTON — Firefighters suspect arson in an early morning fire that gutted a vacant Foster Street home Saturday.
"There was absolutely no excuse for it to start when it did," said Deputy Chief Timothy Murphy.
Murphy said, when firefighters arrived at 75 Foster St. at about 4:45 a.m., the two-and-a-half-story home was burning on every level.
The flames had already burned through several staircases but firefighters did enter the building to search for tenants.
While inside, Murphy said "they could smell what might have been an accelerant, like gasoline."
Investigators from the state Fire Marshall's office were called to the scene Saturday. Murphy said they'd yet to pinpoint how and where the fire started.
